Beekeeping for Beginners

Level: Beginners

Description: The course will provide a mix of practice and theory to enable aspiring beekeepers to start their beekeeping journey.

Course Content: Participants can expect to cover the following aspects of beekeeping:

  • Why keep bees?
  • How a bee colony works
  • The individual bee.
  • Choosing a hive.
  • Frames and foundation.
  • Assembling frames and foundation.
  • Choosing an apiary site.
  • Protective clothing.
  • Smokers, hive tools and records.
  • Inspecting a colony.
  • Finding the queen.
  • Swarming.
  • Forage and bio diversity
  • Honey bee diseases and pests

Tutor: Tutors will be experienced beekeepers from ‘County Waterford Beekeepers Association.’

Fee: €125

Duration: 8 sessions, 2 will be practical sessions to take place at the Association Apiary.

Start Date: February the 4th. Lessons to run consecutively for 6 weeks. Dates for 2 practical sessions to be decided on later.
