Course Description: Ever thought about what Early Medieval Ireland was like? Do you watch TV shows such as 'Game of Thrones' and 'Vikings' and wonder “Was life really like that?”? Perhaps you occasionally drive past a Celtic cross or round tower and contemplate why they were built and by whom? Does the built heritage of our past interest you but the extent of its history overwhelms you? Are you curious about Ireland's Golden Age but feel it is too intricate and inaccessible? Wonder no more!! This eight week course will provide an overview of Early Medieval Ireland with special recognition of the structural remains that we have inherited and their relationship to each other. The course is aimed at anyone with an interest in Irish history especially students and people who work in the tourism industry. No previous knowledge is required.

Course Content:

• Pre Christian Ireland its culture, traditions and surviving evidence
• The introduction of Christianity and its implications and impact
• The stone monuments that have survived and their original function
• The artefacts that have shaped our knowledge
• The lives and conditions of Early Medieval Irish people
• Irelands impact on European education
• The Vikings and their legacy
• Twelfth century change and its effects
