The J.C.S.P. is a national programme sponsored by the Department of Education and Science(D.E.S) and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment(N.C.C.A.). It is based on the concept that all young people are capable of achieving real success in school, and they can have a positive experience of education, if the conditions are favourable. Currently the programme is operating in over 240 schools throughout the country.
It is not an alternative to the Junior Certificate but a support framework to it.The Junior Certificate School Programme follows the curriculum framework set out for the Junior Certificate, and all students sit the Junior Certificate examination. The framework is flexible to meet students different needs.
The Aim for the J.C.S.P student is to:
- Stay in School
- Enjoy School
- Get Involved
- Experience Success
- Have Positive Reports to bring Home
- Develop a Positive Self-Image
- Improve Literacy and Numeracy
- Improve Attendance
- Enjoy a Broad Curriculum
- Achieve a Final Positive Record of Achievement
Dungarvan College Programme Framework
A young person who feels valued within the school community is more likely to stay in school. The development of a positive relationship between the young person and the teachers is central to this. All student classwork, activities, and extra-curricular work, is recorded in an individual JCSP Student Folder. The JCSP funds many initiatives in the college, from outdoor pursuits, to music and film studies. The JCSP Library and Librarian are at the heart of the college. The Library hosts many workshops, like Animal Magic and History Live, and is the hub of literacy and numeracy work.
The JCSP gives each student an enriched experience of school, and, through end-of-term celebrations of student work, enhanced confidence and encouragement.
Through this framework:
- A team approach is adopted
- A broad curriculum is developed for the students
- Positive self-esteem is encouraged
- Students develop a sense of belonging
- A student Profiling System is adopted
- Students have the opportunity to track their own progress
- Achievement and success is acknowledged and rewarded at each stage
- A positive record of achievement is brought home
- A cross-curricular approach with active teaching methodologies is adopted
